1882 Centennial Calendar of Simmons Liver Regulator advertising almanac published by J. H. Zeilin & Co.

Description

Published for the years 1882–1883, this advertising almanac was issued by J. H. Zeilin & Co., proprietors of the widely marketed patent medicine Simmons Liver Regulator. More than a simple calendar, the booklet served as a promotional vehicle combining medical advice, testimonials, household hints, agricultural guidance, astronomical information, and extensive advertising.

Throughout its pages, Simmons Liver Regulator is promoted as a remedy for constipation, dyspepsia, malaria, biliousness, jaundice, colic, nervous complaints, and numerous other ailments. The publication reflects the nineteenth-century belief that many diseases originated from disorders of the liver and digestive tract.

The almanac also contains extensive advertising for Darby’s Prophylactic Fluid, a disinfectant and household preparation promoted as a treatment for contagious diseases, wounds, veterinary conditions, and household sanitation. Particularly notable are claims that the product could combat diphtheria, erysipelas, typhoid fever, smallpox, horse colic, and numerous agricultural ailments.

Several pages focus on counterfeit medicines, including a dramatic “STOP THIEF!” warning and excerpts from court decisions intended to reassure consumers that they were purchasing the genuine product. The final page bears the imprint of Carroll & Co. of Holly, Michigan, identifying the local druggist through whom this particular copy was distributed.

Why it is in the Cabinet

PersoThis almanac represents the golden age of American patent medicine advertising. It demonstrates how nineteenth-century pharmaceutical companies blended medicine, marketing, testimonials, fear of counterfeits, and household advice into a single publication. The inclusion of Darby’s Prophylactic Fluid advertisements, veterinary remedies, German-language marketing, and anti-counterfeiting notices makes it an excellent snapshot of everyday medical commerce in the 1880s. Few items illustrate the culture of patent medicine as effectively as a surviving advertising almanac distributed directly to consumers.nal note about why it is in the collection
