Description

This monumental 1904 edition of Medicology: Or Home Encyclopedia of Health is a massive, richly illustrated volume designed to serve as a comprehensive medical guide for the layperson. Subtitled A Complete Family Guide, the book spans 10 detailed sections and nearly 1,400 pages, covering anatomy, hygiene, disease, home remedies, child-rearing, exercise, household safety, and more. Authored and edited by a team of 20 physicians and medical educators—many associated with the University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson Medical College—Medicology stands as a turn-of-the-century attempt to democratize medical knowledge.

Its contents include over 100 color and monochrome illustrations, anatomical charts (including interactive overlays), and a bonus “Certificate of Membership” in the University Medical Society, which offered subscribers the right to consult physicians by mail or in person. It is both a medical reference and a cultural artifact—revealing early 20th-century beliefs about hygiene, morality, anatomy, sexuality, and home care.

Condition

Structurally intact, but heavily worn. The leather cover shows significant rubbing and chipping, particularly at the corners and spine. Inner pages are yellowed but mostly intact, with binding holding well. Some anatomical overlay plates are partially detached but remain functional and present. The Certificate of Membership is fully attached.

Historical context

Published in 1904, Medicology emerged during a period of immense transformation in medical science. Germ theory was gaining acceptance, public health infrastructure was expanding, and education was becoming more systematized. Books like this offered “scientific” home care at a time when access to doctors—especially in rural America—was limited. It also reflects the lingering overlap of folk medicine, early hygienics, and emerging clinical science.

This edition also mirrors social views of the time—including chapters on “sexual science,” “descriptive mentality” (phrenology), “the passions,” and “electrotherapy”—which combined moral instruction with medical authority.

Curious Facts, Ephemera, and Trivia

  • The title page lists “Ten Books – One Volume,” but the index reveals over 1,400 numbered pages and 23 thematic parts.

  • Includes a Certificate of Membership entitling the bearer to one year of free medical consultations.

  • Charts feature liftable flaps revealing muscle, skeletal, and organ systems.

  • Topics include phrenology, hydrotherapy, mesmerism, and X-ray use—juxtaposed with genuine public health advice on ventilation, food, and disease prevention.

  • Contains illustrations of early vaccination scars, detailed cross-sections of skin, and poetic verse about nutrition (“Pudding and beef make Britons fight”).

Excerpt

“The object of food is primarily to furnish the means for growth, repair, heat and energy… But as we each differ… it is necessary to study the problem of diet as modified and limited by our own individual peculiarities and surroundings.”
(From Part III: Preventive Medicine – Foods and Drinks, p. 197)

Why it is in the Cabinet

This single volume encapsulates the optimism, contradictions, and emerging science of Edwardian-era medicine. From hand-colored anatomy charts to quack cures and socially prescriptive health advice, Medicology is a time capsule of medical thought. It’s equal parts medical reference, social commentary, and curiosity cabinet centerpiece—and one of the most visually striking books in the collection.
