Historical context

The Hobo Medicine Company operated in Beaumont, Texas in the early 20th century. The name “Hobo” was a marketing choice, suggesting ruggedness and utility, not a direct tie to transient worker folk medicine. Regional patent medicines like this were often marketed for a wide range of ailments, including coughs, digestive complaints, and rheumatism, sometimes containing alcohol or narcotics until regulations tightened after the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.

Curious Facts, Ephemera, and Trivia

  • Cobalt glass was used both for aesthetics and to slow the degradation of light-sensitive ingredients.

  • Surviving bottles from small Texas medicine firms are scarce; embossed examples are particularly collectible.

Excerpt

From similar period advertisements for regional remedies:

“Relieves colds, stomach trouble, and female complaints. A household necessity.”
(Note: direct Hobo Medicine ads have not yet been located; this excerpt represents typical period phrasing.)

Why it is in the Cabinet

This bottle is a vivid example of the regional patent medicine industry in Texas during the early 20th century. Its rarity, striking cobalt color, and embossed branding make it an important representation of small-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing and marketing before national standardization and regulation.
